How the levels are assigned

Every word carries one CEFR level, from A1 (beginner) to C2 (proficient). The 28,252 words in the A1–C1 band — the vocabulary a learner actually meets in courses, exams and everyday media — were graded and then reviewed level by level in 2026, so that a word's level reflects when learners really need it, not just how often it appears in print. C2 is deliberately the long tail: 56,381 rare, technical and literary words that the app never pushes at you unprompted.

Definitions are written using words from lower levels, so an A1 word is explained with A1 words. Where a word has several common meanings (269 of the A1 words do), each meaning gets its own definition, example and translations.
