25 questions from one level. Shows whether you have mastered it and which words to learn.
How the test works
- Words are taken from all levels A1–C2 of the WordStudy dictionary (84,633 words with a CEFR level). The test adapts: after each screen it moves to the level where your knowledge ends.
- Made-up words and a meaning check correct for guessing and over-ticking: we do not just count ticks.
- We measure the 23,208 commonly used words of the dictionary. Very rare words, names and word forms are not counted, so the number is an honest lower estimate.

Questions
How many English words do I need?
Research on reading suggests that you understand a text comfortably when you know about 98% of its words, and need at least about 95% to follow it. How many words that takes depends on the text: films and everyday speech need fewer than newspapers or novels.
Is the result exact?
No — it is a rough estimate from about 65 words. If you are close to the border between two levels, a second try can move you one step up or down.
Why are some words made up?
They catch ticking by habit. If you tick them, the test lowers the estimate — that keeps the result honest.
