TV series to learn English by level

We count the words of every episode against the WordStudy dictionary, so you can see how much of a series you will follow at your level — and which words to learn before you press play.

Researchers who study listening say you follow a film or a show comfortably when you know about 95–98% of the words you hear. The numbers below are exactly that share: known words among all words spoken in an episode.

We start with Friends, the series learners ask about most. More series will follow.

Learn English with Friends: season 1 vocabulary

Learn these words before you watch

WordStudy imports the words of a YouTube video, a text or a photo, keeps the ones above your level and repeats them until they stick.

Word counts come from the Friends transcripts of the Emory University character-mining corpus (Apache-2.0), cross-checked against subtitles from OpenSubtitles.org; we publish only numbers and word lists, never the dialogue.
