How we count
- We take the video's subtitles and look up every word in the WordStudy dictionary of 84,633 English words, each with a CEFR level.
- For a level we use a typical learner: almost every word of the levels below, most words of their own level and fewer of the next one. If you have taken our test, we use your own result instead.
- The percentage is the share of familiar words, not of understood meaning. Research on reading and listening suggests that with about 95% of the words known people follow the meaning comfortably; at 90% it varies a lot from person to person.
Questions
Why 90–95% and not 100%?
If you know every word, there is nothing new to learn. At 90–95% you understand the video and still meet new words — the best mix for learning.
Are the subtitles checked by people?
Some channels publish their own subtitles; for others the automatic YouTube subtitles are used. Automatic subtitles have mistakes, so treat the numbers as an estimate.
Can I learn the words of any video?
Yes. In WordStudy add words from any YouTube video by its link — the app shows the words with translations into your language, and you choose which ones to learn.
Some videos and their transcripts come from the YouTube-Commons dataset (CC BY 4.0). All videos belong to their channels.
