False friends: English and Thai

23 English words that Thai has borrowed but that mean something different in English — the traps Thai speakers fall into most often.

Thai has borrowed a great many words from English, spelled in Thai script and pronounced the Thai way: แฟน, แอร์, ฟรี, ฟิต. Most keep their meaning, but some drifted in daily use, and others were shortened until they no longer match the English word. That is why they are risky: a word you use every day feels safe, so nobody looks it up.

Each word below has its real meaning in English, the Thai word it gets confused with, and how to say that idea in English.

Questions

What are false friends?

False friends are words in two languages that look or sound alike but have different meanings. In Thai the typical case is a borrowed English word, like «แอร์», which Thais use for an air conditioner, while English «air» means the air we breathe.

Why does Thai have so many of them?

Thai borrows English words directly and writes them in Thai script. Over time some of these words changed meaning in Thai or were shortened, while the English original stayed the same.

How do I stop mixing them up?

Learn each word with an example sentence rather than as a one-word translation, and check familiar-looking words too. Practising the tricky ones a few days apart helps the right meaning stick.
