Questions about irregular verbs
How many irregular verbs are there in English?
There are about 200 irregular verbs that learners meet in books and conversation. This table has 193. You don't need all of them at once: the 50 most common ones cover most everyday English.
Which irregular verbs should I learn first?
Start with the 50 most common verbs (be, have, do, get, go, say, make…). The "50 most common" filter shows them, sorted by how often they appear in English texts.
Learned or learnt, dreamed or dreamt?
Both are correct. American English prefers -ed (learned, dreamed), British English uses both. In the table such forms are marked BrE and AmE.
Got or gotten?
In British English the past participle of get is got (I've got a car). American English also uses gotten when it means to obtain or to become (It has gotten cold).
