Daniel had always been the kind of traveller who planned everything. His notebook contained the times of every train, the opening hours of every museum and a list of restaurants for each evening. On this trip, he had three countries to see in ten days, and there was no room for mistakes. The mistake came anyway. Just before landing, the pilot apologised for the late arrival, and Daniel realised he would miss his connection. At the airport, a screen showed the cancellation of the next flight as well. He stood in a long queue for two hours, only to be told that he would receive compensation, but that the earliest flight was in two days. His one-hour layover had become a two-day one. At first, he was furious. Then, looking at a map, he noticed a small mountain village not far from the airport. A shuttle bus went there twice a day. For once, Daniel did something he had never done before: he left his notebook in his bag and got on the bus. The village had no famous landmark and no museum. He had to navigate its narrow streets without a phone signal, change money at a terrible exchange rate in the only shop that would do it, because nobody accepted cards, and order food by pointing at other people's plates. He wandered for hours without any route in mind. An old man invited him to watch a local football match, and he ended up having dinner with half the village. On the plane home, Daniel thought about all the trips he had planned so carefully. He remembered the schedules, but very few real moments. Two unplanned days in a village had given him more stories than an entire organised tour. He still makes plans, but now he always leaves one empty day. A long layover, he likes to say, is not a waste of time if you let it surprise you.
